Founded in 1942 by German Jewish immigrants fleeing the Nazi regime, the ARI – Associação Religiosa Israelita- was the first liberal synagogue in Rio de Janeiro. Its founders, who got here in the late 1930s, were to be the roots of a successful progressive Jewish presence in Rio. In 1942, the ARI was officially born, with the arrival of Rabbi Dr. H. Lemle z.l., from Germany.
